Katarína Macurová studied under Prof. Dušan Kállay at the Studio of Free Printmaking and Illustration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. During her studies at the Academy she spent time in Greece, Mexico and the USA for purposes of research. In 2010 she received a doctorate in Fine Arts from the Academy. On completion of her studies she joined the Academy’s staff as Prof. Kállay’s assistant at the Studio of Free Printmaking and Illustration. Since 2013 she has taught ‘The composition of editorial illustration and the illustration of children’s picture books’, a course at the Department of Graphic Arts at the Academy.
In her own work, Katarína Macurová focuses on digital and 3D illustration, which she combines with traditional artistic techniques. She is illustrator of the books Turčianske povesti and Riečne povesti (Matica slovenská). In 2015 she illustrated for Slovart publishers the book Ja nič, ja muzikant, for which she received a prize in the Most Beautiful Slovak Books of 2015 awards. Her current focus is children’s picture books, for which she composes the text and illustrations. Zajíčkova cesta/Bunny’s Journey (65. Pole publishers), her first picture book, received the Communications Arts Award of Excellence (USA), was shortlisted for the AOI Award of the British Association of Illustrators and appeared in the 2015 Best Books for Children catalogue. Proč nekveteš/Why Won’t You Flower?, her latest picture book, was published in 2016 by Albatros.
