Jiří Zahrádka

doc. Phdr. Jiří Zahrádka, Ph.D. (born 1970, in Brno), is a musicologist, curator of the Janáček archive of the Department of Music History at the Moravian Museum, and a associate professor at the Department of Musicology, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. After his studies at the Brno Conservatory, he read musicology and aesthetics at Masaryk University. The focus of his research includes the life and works of the composer Leoš Janáček. His other field is the musical life in Brno in 1850–1970. He is the author of dozens of scholarly articles, co-author (with S. Přibáňová) of the book Leoš Janáček ve fotografiích (Leoš Janáček in Photographs; Brno 2008), and was assisting John Tyrrel on his extensive monograph Janáček: Years of a Life (Faber and Faber, 2006, 2007). He is author of the book  Divadlo nesmí býti lidu komedií. Leoš Janáček a Národní divadlo v Brně (Theatre must not be comedy for the people. Leoš Janáček and the National Theatre in Brno; Brno 2012). At present, he is in charge of a large project focused on the correspondence of Leoš Janáček. For several years, he has been involved as a critical editor of Leoš Janáček’s works: Šárka (Universal Edition 2004), Výlety páně Broučkovy (The Excursions of Mr Brouček; Universal Edition 2004), Příhody lišky Bystroušky (The Cunning Little Vixen; Universal Edition 2010) Věc Makropulos (The Makropulos affair; Universal Edition 2016), Osud (Fate; Editio Bärenreiter 2016), Mládí (Youth, Henle Verlag – Universal Edition, 2015), Pochod Modráčků (March of the Bluebirds, Henle Verlag – Universal Ediotion 2016); compositions for violoncello (Editio Bärenreiter 2008; with J. Fukač and B. Havlík), women’s choral pieces (Editio Janáček 2002; with M. Štědroň Jr.), mixed choral music (Editio Janáček 2007; with L. Faltus), Sborník skladeb z pražských studií (Collection of Compositions from Prague Studies; Editio Janáček 2001; with T. Straková), Glagolská mše – verze poslední ruky (Glagolitic Mass – final authorised version; Editio Bärenreiter 2011; with L. Faltus) and Glagolská mše – verze září 1927 (Glagolitic Mass – “September 1927” version; Editio Bärenreiter 2012). Currently, he is working on the critical edition of Sinfonietta (Universal Edition), piano cycle V mlhách  (In the mists; Henle Verlag – Universal Edition) and  orchestral rhapsody Taras Bulba (Universal Edition). In 2004–2014 he was a dramaturge of the international festival Janáček Brno.
